Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Empire risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all the hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire's impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They're seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia's brother is arrested for treason. Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from the rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire's greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school's finest soldier--and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he's being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize the their destinies are intertwined--and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Review

I loved this one so much, it has to be the best fantasy I've read this year. I loved reading about Laia and Elias, and how their lives slowly wove themselves together. I also loved Thahir's minor characters too, I loved Cain and Helene! I also love how a force always knew what was going on and what was going to happen next before anyone else. I can't wait to see how this force's plan comes into play in the next installment, and why they helped Laia's and Elias's cause to start with. I also loved Tahir's unique writing style, along with her incredible plot line, and I can't wait the see where she'll take it in the next installment too. Tahir blew me away, and I can't wait to see where she'll take me with this story next.
